Go big or go home. This was the mood at the 2019 Met Gala on May 6th in New York City. This year’s theme, Susan Sontag’s essay Notes on “Camp”, was quite the catalyst for fashion’s ultimate night. All eyes were on the pink carpet where our favorite celebrities, industry A-listers and personalities showcased their takes on “camp”. Judith Leiber bags were front and center as they sparkled in the hands of some of the night’s most show-stopping attendees. Judith Leiber handbags have always been the ultimate symbol of exuberance and whimsy and this was the night when our retro cordless phone, vintage camera, and boombox clutches were the perfect accompaniments to the one-of-a-kind costumes. Here are some of the nights most notable looks starring our exquisite minaudières.
There is no better place to start than with Lady Gaga. This theme seemed created for her theatrical persona and she did not disappoint. Her collaboration with designer Brandon Maxwell consisted of her transforming into a real-life Russian doll and included 4 looks. She made quite the entrance in a sweeping cape in shocking pink that required an entourage to carry it. In true Lady Gaga fashion, she completed her arrival in black silky undergarments pulling a wagon load of champagne. Gaga carried our oversized black rubberized
brick phone clutch and used it to playfully pose for the crowd. From start to finish, this look was truly Camp-rageous.
The looks continued to delight like
Zendaya’s full-on Cinderella transformation in custom Tommy Hilfiger. She even had her own fairy godmother, stylist Law Roach, who carried a magic wand that wafted smoke and made her dress light up. Our dazzling carriage clutch, itself inspired by the classic fairy tale, pulled the look altogether. Janelle Monae, a starlet who always manages to make a statement on the red carpet, had one of our favorite camp-appropriate looks. Her custom Christian Siriano balloon skirted ball gown was inspired by Surrealist art and was truly ‘eye’-catching. This optical-themed stunner even had a motorized blinking eyelid detail at the chest for a unique mix of high art and modern technology. Monae carried Leiber’s fringe-trimmed eyeball clutch in sparkling silver that made a truly one-of-a-kind finishing touch. Hailee Steinfeld’s Viktor & Rolf’s neon tulle confection featured a “No Photos Please” message that embodied the tongue in cheek vibe of the night. Her choice of our Flash
vintage camera clutch could not have been more perfect, especially when she used it to ham it up on the carpet.
Finally, America’s campiest family, the Kardashians, also counted on Judith Leiber to accessorize their head-turning looks. Kendall Jenner, in a fiery and feathered Versace, carried our gilded Boom Box clutch, while her sister Kylie, also in Versace, opted for our Duchesse bag. Both ladies, in their Vegas showgirl inspired-looks, managed to look stunning and fabulously thematic at the same time.
