The History Of The Judith Leiber Brand

Before Judith Leiber came along, handbags were not as imaginative or as colorful, usually coming in just one color and material.

Seeing that there was definitely a gap in the market and a demand for more choice, Judith Leiber made it her life’s work to bring joy to women all over the world with her crystal-covered couture clutches.

Born in 1921, Judith Leiber grew up in Budapest, Hungary, and it was here that she learned about pattern making and the craftmanship of making bags.

After the Second World War, Leiber worked for a variety of handbag brands where her passion for the craft was firmly cemented. However, it wasn’t until 1963 that she finally launched her own company.

It was a simple mistake that led to her trademark use of rhinestones for her one-of-a-kind designs. When one of her handbags became stained, she quickly rectified the situation using a selection of rhinestones. Wowed by her creation, she started to incorporate jewels and crystals into her designs, and the Judith Leiber brand we know and love today was created. And the rest, as they say, is history.

How Are Judith Leiber Bags Made?

Did you know that the time it takes to make a Judith Leiber couture clutch from concept to creation can take up to two years? While this may seem like a long time, even to make such an intricate bag as a Judith Leiber one, there is so much that goes into their unique design and creation process.

Each design is conceptualized in the Judith Leiber New York studio and then brought to life by their classically trained sculptors. The finished plaster model then travels all the way to Florence in Italy to be refined and duplicated in brass.

Semi-precious stones are sourced from all over the world and custom fitted for each minaudiere. Facets are then created with a diamond tipped mill and polished to perfection.

Judith Leiber bags are made from only the finest raw materials, such as Italian leather, 24-karat gold, premium quality crystal, sterling silver, and raw brass.

The model is then scanned to create a 3-dimensional mold which is used to make steel stamps. Every design that has been produced since it began in 1963 is kept in the archives of the factory.

Next, a brass plate is then stamped, cut, and soldered. Once the assembly process is complete and the minaudiere has been polished, a final gold or silver plating bath finishes the sculpture.

We then head over to New York, where the design really starts to come to life, and crystal artwork is designed from a palette of 130 colors of crystals. The artwork is meticulously hand-painted onto the brass sculpture, which takes three days to complete.

Once this has been completed, the selected crystals are set over a period of five days by one skilled artisan, and then the process is complete.

What Makes Judith Leiber Bags So Special?

As you can see from the above, the care and consideration that goes into each Judith Leiber creation is immense, with multiple processes that all need to be perfectly executed to get the desired end result.

All in all, there are 20 artisans involved in every couture creation, with many of these skilled individuals dedicating their entire lives to honing their craft. Each with a love of craftsmanship and a commitment to perfection, these artisans are what makes each Judith Leiber bag so special.
